Grit City Podcast 105: Steve and Kristi Nebel
Episode 105: Americana Duo - Steve and Kristi Nebel
On this episode, the guys sit down with Steve and Kristi Nebel, a couple that have been playing together since the 70’s. They started out playing locally here in Washington, in Alaska, and through Canada. Since 2001 they have also been touring throughout England. They play folk style music with words and notes that leave deep impressions on their fans. A quote from a fan from their website:
I just want to say how deeply I appreciate both your music and your commitment to that something greater for humanity than militarization. You have the ability to reach the deep, deep pain in me and give it voice. You also have the ability to reach my deepest hopes . . . I don't think it's all the lyrics or music though -- there's something in each of you that has the ability to connect beyond the words and music. You are a gift...that I am so grateful to receive. Linda Frank
The show kicks off with Kristi sharing how she and Steve met at Evergreen State College in Olympia, and what they studied while attending school there. Steve dives into what got them playing music, starting a band, and the first concerts they played in 1973. He then talks about how they got into making money playing music, the variety of music they played, and learning about writing a bio, booking agents, and what it meant to being a cover band.
Next, Steven discusses him and Kristi branching off to play as a duo, their first gig in Alaska and what it meant to leave their house in Renton and relocate there. Steven then talks about the point they became professionals and 10 years of playing all across Alaska and Canada.
At the half way point, Kristi talks about the bands’ first England tour in 2001, and finishing their 9th tour this year. Steven explains how selling books on Amazon during their down times lead to paying for their first trip to Europe and the 6 shows they played the first year visiting England. In addition, at this point, they talk about the great experiences they’ve had with friends and exploring the English culture.
As the show winds down, the conversation turns to how people in Europe drive less and the use of public transportation that’s available. They discuss the fundamental change with time and how the younger generation in England typically don’t get a driver’s license; instead using the train, riding bikes, and taking other public transportation.
The show comes to and end with Steve and Kristi letting the guys know where they are playing next. People can find them online at: http://www.sknebel.com/ for more info on where they will be next.
Thanks Steve and Kristi for joining the guys on this episode for an interesting look into what it means to be traveling musicians.
