GCP 40: Officer Pete and Alfred
On this episode we feature two interviews from our Norwescon series. In the first interview we talk to Officer Pete, the overseer at Norwescon. Pete started attending Norwescon as a fan and club member over 20 years ago when he was 18. Volunteering as a security guard at the con helped spark his desire to pursue a career in law enforcement. After becoming a police officer he continued to volunteer as a security guard each year at the con. He officially became an undercover officer after Dream Con, where there was a mishap with a woman who had barreled out the hotel window. Police officers had to storm through the door into the room to find out what happened. After this mishap, the police officers recommended the cons hire an undercover officer and Norwescon jumped on the idea. Since Pete had been volunteering for years, it seemed like a good fit and he was in.
The discussion then turns to Pete as he talks about becoming a lifetime Trekkie. Bored one Saturday afternoon, he flipped on the black and white TV and watched the first episode of Star Trek. That one episode hooked him and he became a lifetime fan.
The conversation then switches to the common problems that come up at the Cons; the biggest problem being ghosters. Ghosters are people that show up to the con not to go and enjoy the panels and support the con but to just show up to party. They tend to be disruptive without any true love for the con itself and cause a lot of problems.
The discussion then turns to Pete’s favorite part of the con, which is cosplay. His dress of choice at the con is a full commander uniform from the TNG era of Star Trek. He also participates as a storm trooper with the local 501st legion, a group of Star Wars empire fans. The legion does appearances at places such as Star Wars book signings, new toy releases, new video game releases, and new movie releasees. At the appearances they collect donations for local charity. Some of the charities they donate to include food banks, children’s hospitals, and cancer research foundations.
This part of the show finishes up discussing the new Star Wars movies and panels that Pete was on this year.
Following Pete’s interview is a short interview with the ambassador of Crypticon, a 104 year old skeleton named Alfred. The Crypticon site explains it best, they are: Three days of your favorite actors, authors, and artists, along with tons of new people and things you never knew existed. But we are so much more than a tidal wave of blood, guts, and scares.
