Talk then turns to the Tacoma Nomads that was founded in 1974. They practice and play at the Portland Ave Community Center. Tobin and Matt explains what rugby is and the laws behind the game. For those not familiar with the game, Rugby is best described as a blend of the contact of American football, the running of soccer, and the transition of basketball. It is a game played between two teams with 15 players in each, played on a rectangular field, with the object being to run with an oval ball across the opponent’s goal line or kick it through the upper portion of the goal posts. Rugby is the second most participated in sport after soccer. They also discuss the rugby world cup, held every 4 years, and the “Haka” Wardance performed pre-match by New Zealand’s All Black team.

Their next topic is the culture of rugby, where after playing a hard game, they get together after to drink and sing songs to build camaraderie in the team. After the game, each team picks the man of the match from the opposite team boat race and shoot the boot. Shoot the boot is where someone takes off their shoe, and those that mess up performing the song, has to shoot the boot. They also talk about Zulu, a tradition in rugby that involves an initiation rite of a rugger that scores their first try.
The show winds down talking about the social aspect of rugby and how players are welcome to play worldwide. A very close knit community throughout the world, rugby players are welcome to play wherever they go. Tobin discuss his experience traveling throughout the world and playing rugby in places like China, Australia, and France. Matt discusses joining the team here on the west coast after moving from the east coast and how welcoming players were when he got here. They also discuss injuries they’ve experienced while playing and the type of rugby that is played in the Olympics.
The podcast ends chatting about the deep respect the players have for the refs in the game. Called them sir, team members pay them the highest respect because of the realization that they wouldn’t be able to play if it weren’t for the sirs who ref. They also talk about the quick thinking skills that are required for the game and how fun it is to play.
