GCP 83: Old Soldier Distillery
Episode 83: Old Soldier Distillery
This week the guys talk to Rodney Kaeding and Andrew Fairchok from the Old Soldier Distillery, Tacoma’s only Whiskey Distillery, that’s been open for about 14 months. Their whiskey is made with from a traditional corn whiskey recipe that has a very unique flavor. Visit them at 309 Puyallup Ave, Unit B1 in Tacoma, they have free samplers and provide tours. Those interested in a tour please contact them in advance to reserve one today.
The show kicks off with Rodney talking about the places they purchase their equipment, 85 percent of it being local. Local companies include Beer Essentials, where they get their smaller equipment and a farmer in central Washington that their corn is purchased from. They then talk about how they got started, which began as an idea to make a scooter that runs off of alcohol that blossomed into making whiskey.
Conversation continues with the guys talking about the process to get their license. An overall 18 month ordeal, before they could get their license they had to have the full facility setup and contracts in place. During the process, there were a lot of steps that are required, including financial analysis to verify they could finance the business and inspection of the facility. The guys also explain the process of being green and the benefits it provides to other people.
The show then turns to the GCP guys sampling the three types of Old Soldier whiskey. First the traditional white, which is what people would get in the 1800’s and is traditionally not aged, the bourbon, which has a woodier flavor, and the traditional whiskey, all of which the recipes were passed down from Andrew's grandfather. They also explain the history behind the whiskey as the guys are sampling.
The show winds down with Rodney talking about recently getting their agent license that lets them do their own distribution and the plan to work with 10 bars locally that they can supply to. They also talk about future hopes, including being thousandaires, getting their families involved, and keeping the business going for multiple years down the road.
