GCP 85: Nightside Distillery
Episode 85: Nightside Distillery
This week, the guys talk to Ray Bunk from Nightside Distillery located in Edgewood. Nightside Distillery uses ingredients from local Washington crops to handcraft world class spirits. In 2015 the company won The Best Domestic Vodka Award from The Fifty Best. They have also taken second place twice for their Apple Pie moonshine. People can find them in over 100 local spots, including Total Wine & More, Beyond the Bottle, and The Eleven Eleven. Visitors can also visit them at their Edgewood location and take a tour and learn about how the process of making vodka works.
The show starts off discussing steak and eggs in bars and their review of Malarkeys, the great Tacoma bar where they record the podcast. They also discuss different types of meat served in different countries, including guinea pig meat. Ray then dives into a description of the business, their location, and their hours.
Next Ray talks about what he does when he’s not working at the distillery and how he stumbled into it. Outside of the distillery, he also has a career as a police officer. Ray talks about working as a recruiter for ITT Technical Institute, and after taking the civil service test while waiting for a position as a fire fighter, the city offered him the position as a police officer. Originally from Chicago, Ray also tells the guys how he ended up in Seattle.
Podcast continues with discussion on traffic violation tickets, specifically camera light tickets. Each guy talks about their experience with the cameras and the loop holes that people jump through when getting them. The guys also talk about changes in driving over the next 10 years and the possibility of driver less cars.
Conversation then turns to where the name of the company came from and how the business got started in 2014. He explains why they chose Edgewood for the city to open up shop, and how after talking to the owner of the building, they found there was already someone that had started a distillery business that they were able to team with. Ray also talks about the vodka base and the three different types they sell.
The show winds down with conversation on the importance of traveling the world and the impact it has a person’s life. Ray talks about his travels to Peru and Camino de Santiago pilgrimage from France to Spain and what an amazing experience each trip held.
This podcast comes to and end talking about different types of meat they’ve tried, including frog legs and alligators. They also discuss Nightside hosting tastings at Total Wine & More, marketing, and places they’re looking to expand their product to.
