GCP 92: playtestNW

Episode 92: PlaytestNW

This week’s episode is the second in the Norwescon 39 series. On this episode, the guys sit down with Sarah Sharp, the playtestNW events director for the Portland area, and Levi Mote, a game designer from playtest NW. playtestNW is a game incubator company that gives game developers access to conventions, play stations, in addition to access to game testers in the Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland areas. They are also owners of Daily Magic Games, a company that publishes board and card games.

The show kicks off with Sarah and Levi describing what playtestNW does in addition to the newest game that has been released by Daily Magic Games, Valeria: Card Kingdoms and their successful Kickstarter fundraiser for Villages of Valeria. Sarah explains that their initial goal was $8,000 and they ended up raising $214,000.

They continue the conversation talking about the process of how the game developers can get involved. Sarah notes that gamers just need to go to the playtestNW website, register their game on the website, and if they want, they can join as a designer member which entitles developers to a whole list of membership benefits which includes: preferred table reservation at all playtestNW events and free table reservations at playtestNW’s monthly large events.

The episode winds down discussing the importance of developers to get their new product in front of as many people as they can instead of worrying about someone stealing their idea. Levi talks about how unprotect able developers game ideas are, with no option for a patent, he says the best thing to do instead of worry about someone else taking it, it is getting it out on the market quickly.

They also give props to businesses that have helped their business grow: Mox Boarding House, Around the Table, Uncles Games, Guardian Games in Portland, and Vancouver Public Library in Vancouver on C Street.

Thanks Sarah and Levi for joining the guys for a very interesting and enjoyable conversation. The guys would also like to throw a shout out to their NorwesCon Sponsors: Nightside Distillery, Pacific Brewing Company and Old Soldier Distillery.
