Episode 93: David and Anita – Costumers

This week’s episode is the third in the Norwescon 39 series. On this episode, the guys sit down with David Tackett from Parkland and Anita Taylor from Seattle, both of which have been attending the con since 1988. They are also both members of the SCA, The Society for Creative Anachronism.

The show kicks off with David talking about the year he started attending the con and performing in the mascaraed his second year in. Anita talks about her dragon hunter costume that portrays an actual gaming figure, made up of metal armor finished in what looks like dragon scales. She also talks about getting best in show last year at another con.

Conversation then turns to how David and Anita learned their craft of costume design. Anita explains coming from a long line of seamstresses in the Seattle area and getting into making costumes at the age of 6. They also talk about what they do for their day job. Anita discusses being a technical writer for a medical device company, and David explains working for a retail service company.

The show winds down with chat about Anita making historical custom costumes and her favorite that was a 17th century doublet and pants outfit. They also talk about the time and cost that goes into making custom costumes in addition to the specific type of fabric Anita uses and their enjoyment of seeing costumes that have a twist on them at the con, like this years steampunk Captain America.

This week’s episode comes to and end with David and Anita discussing going to Worldcon in Spokane, attending the mascaraed while there, and doing a group presence of the Thermians from Galaxy Quest.
