We cover everything from lifestyle and small businesses to events, musicians, bands and interesting characters we find along the way.  Things that we feel personify the meaning of "Grit": Fortitude, Perseverance, Strength of Character, Determination. Tenacity, Resolve, etc.

Episode 94: Dr. Ricky

This week’s episode is the fourth in the Norwescon 39 series where the guys are joined by Dr. Ricky. Dr. Ricky is a research scientist and food blogger that attends Norwescon to teach people about science and help sci-fi writers make their science more accurate. This year he sat on the panels for Internal Warfare, The Tumblr Effect, The Future of Accessibility, Alien & Fantasy Biology, The Once and Future of Dinosaur, and Evolution Is Just a Theory! In the past, he has been on panels that include: Moving the Breadbastket and The Future of Farming.

They kick the show off with Dr. Ricky explaining what he does and the importance of science accuracy in Sci-Fi movies. He goes through examples of movies that stray from realistic science and how doing so can quickly draw someone away from the story. He talks about his profession in science with a specialization in the field of microbiology.

They then dive into the topic on the study of life and his study of how information goes from one generation to the next, how it can be changed, and how we can take advantage of it. He also discusses Gregor Mendel, the founder of the modern science of genetics.

At the halfway mark, talk turns to the panels that he was on this year at the con which included: The Once and Future of Dinosaur. He then chats about his blog, Science Based Cuisine, which gives him the opportunity to teach people about science through food. He also tells the guys about what his day to day schedule at the university looks like. Dr. Ricky discusses writing for federal grants, conducting research projects and teaching students.

The show comes to and end with Dr. Ricky talking about how long he’s been attending the Norwescon, and what makes it special for him. He expresses that what makes it special to him is that every year it’s different, that he gets to teach others something new and that he gets to learn something new each time.
