Cody and Hurchel from DC253 join the guys on this episode! DC253 is Tacoma's area DEF CON Group. They're a gathering point for folks interested in the alternate applications of modern technology, referred to properly as hacking. They meet the last Friday of the month at Devils Reef. On July 27th, they'll be at The Grand Cinema for a pre DEF CON movie screening of the 1983 hacker classic War Games.

1:32 – Jeff announces the day's safe word, Justin introduces the guests, and Cody shares the unique crowds they get at their monthly meetings. Hurchell explains what DEF CON is, Cody talks about the other cons that go on simultaneously as DEF CON, and Hurchell talks about starting the group. Jeff talks about hacking into his house recently, Scott shares his love of the hacking community, and Hurchell explains the true meaning behind hacking.

14:46 – Hurchell talks about what got him into hacking, Jeff poses a hypothetical question to the group, and Cody talks about helping find missing people online. They talk about the importance for people to check their credit because of how frequently personal information is sold online, Hurchell talks about the concern with what happens to our data in the future, and they chat about the recent story on LaMDA AI.

30:19 – Justin talks about his excitement around VR, Jeff and Scott talk about the first thing they did when visiting each other in the VR world, and Hurchell shares books with authors that do a great job of forecasting future technology. Justin talks about the technology advancements that came with Covid, the hybrid working environment, and jobs that robots can take over. Hurchell talks about the DEF CON groups in VR this year, the intent behind their Discord channel, and plans for having a more established place with hacker activities in the future.

Justin talks about what hacking means, what he likes about having information about what's going on in the area, and the importance of the open flow of news on the internet. Talking Pizza with Tai from The Pizza Bro's Podcast

Tai from the Pizza Bro’s podcast sits in to talk about all things pizza and podcasting. Tai has been doing podcasting in the PNW for the past 12 years, including Pizza Bro’s that has been going for over 3 years and has put out 167 episodes so far. His brother co-hosts Pizza Bro’s where they talk about pizza, candy, and traveling with occasional guests that join in the conversation. Listeners can find them on their favorite podcast streaming service and can also follow them on Twitter and Instagram.

2:08 – Justin shares how listeners can submit comments or recommendations for podcast visitors, how he met Tai, and Tai shares how long him and his brother have been doing the podcast. He talks about getting started in podcasting, Justin talks about conventions in the area, and the PNW podcast convention. Tai talks on meeting fans at the convention, the other podcasts he does in addition to the Pizza Bro’s, and how his pizza love goes into his body art.

18:44 – Justin shares a local pizza place that is intending to sell Keto Pizza, Tai comments that Chicago Style pizza isn’t technically a pizza, it’s a pie, and Justin shares his favorite deep dish pizza in Chicago. Scott explains what a French Toast Pizza is, Tai talks about doing a podcast with the owners of Tipsy Tomato, and the different pizza’s they’ve tried on the podcast. Justin shares his love of Rubens, his favorite place to get Rubens in Tacoma, and Tai talks on the podcast shift to talking candy on the show in addition to pizza.

41:18 – They talk on toping hot takes, Tai shares on of the best Hawaiian pizza he has ever had, and the great lunch buffet at the Smoking Monkey Pizza in Seattle. Scott and Tai give props to Wicked Pie Pizza in Puyallup, Justin talks on stumbling on Johnny Americas Hawaiian Pizza, the Tai talks on where the Hawaiian Pizza was invented. Justin gives a shout out to the Taco Pizza from Tacoma and props to the Devils Reef in Tacoma.

56:02 – Tai talks on the list he has made of the semi-local Tacoma Pizza places, how he feels on New York Style pizza vs Chicago, and doing a pizza tour with friends starting on Olympia. He recommends those that would like to do a pizza tour should limit it to eight locations, they talk on plans of doing a co-sponsored pizza tour in Tacoma, and Justin give props to businesses on 6th Ave. Scott suggests a burger tour as well, them having Odd Otter on GCP back in the day, and Justin talks gives a shout out to Loose Wheel. Tai shares how to make a pizza meatloaf and Scott gives a shout out to Blue Max store in Puyallup.

Art on The Ave

This time the guys recorded from Tacoma’s Art on the Ave 2018. Art on the Ave is Tacoma’s largest art based event that celebrates music and arts along 6th Avenue from State St to Alder. This year was its 18th year and attracted thousands of supporters.

The show kicks off with Brogan admitting to stealing some of Justin’s BNB, Justin discussing setting up his man cave at his new house, co-working spaces in Tacoma, and what’s going on with this year’s Arts on the Ave. Brogan discusses his new idea for a band name and then they head down to Art on The Ave where they first talk to Liz Wilcox from the Hilltop Artists Glass Blowing. She discusses what Hilltop Artists is and what they do to benefit kids and teens in the community to help keep them out of trouble.

14:42 – The guys stop by Crown Bar, a local bar that has been on Diners and Dives, the guys call out Guy Fieri and express what they love about the bar. They then head to Mary Mart to discuss the stores want to destigmatize cannabis, and Rusty’s new restaurant on 54th by the Airport Tavern in Tacoma, The Church Cantina.

24:33 – Steve Dunkelberger is the next person they run into. He talks about his Drunk History, Tacoma Addition, a bar crawl starting at The Frontier and tours around the city providing history while enjoying drinks at great places around Tacoma. He drops some Tacoma history followed by the guys getting ‘buckets’ at Jazz Bones for $9. They also discuss where ‘pork chop sandwiches’ came from then enjoy some of the music at the show.

39:22 – They talk with the owner of Devils Reef and Tacoma Cabana in Tacoma. He tells the guys about the names of his drinks, Justin expresses the feel of the bar, the different art styles in the bar, the owner tells about how he came up with the ideas for the bar, and how he and Brogan met. They then chat with Levi Lyon, owner of Lyon Pride Music.

This week’s show comes to a close with talks about vanilla and natural extracts, the need for more research of things that say ‘Natural Flavor’ and the last stop at O’Malley’s. They recap their walk, the weird things they say, what they bought along the way, and where people can find them and Art of Ave online.
