The Grit City Podcast is a weekly audio experience like no other! Hosted from the vibrant city of Tacoma, Washington - also known as "Grit City," our show has been entertaining and informing listeners since 2014. And what a ride it's been!
Every week, we release a new episode that introduces you to the dynamic and inspiring individuals who call the Pacific Northwest home. From local business owners and entrepreneurs to authors, artists, and unique characters, our guests embody the hard-working, blue-collar spirit that Grit City is known for. And let's not forget the occasional drug-fueled weirdo we may have met at a comedy club the night before!
The Grit City Podcast first launched back in the summer of 2014 and quickly built a loyal fanbase of listeners who appreciated the show's unique perspective on the Seattle/Tacoma area. After a brief hiatus in 2017, the podcast was rebooted in 2018, with even more friends and family members involved. It quickly regained its "must listen to" status and went on to deliver an impressive 275 episodes and counting, delivering over 280 hours of audio content to our fans since. With no signs of slowing down soon!
Our mission at The Grit City Podcast is simple: to bring the hard-working spirit of the Pacific Northwest to the world and have a good time doing it! We aim to create a community of listeners who understand and appreciate the concept of "grit". With a focus on local business owners, entrepreneurs, and unique characters, sprinkled with a good dose of humor, The Grit City Podcast is a one-of-a-kind audio experience that you won't want to miss.
So, if you're looking for a weekly dose of inspiration, laughter, and a celebration of the human spirit, look no further than The Grit City Podcast! Subscribe now and join us for the ride!

On this Sunday Sermon, they discuss Souper Bowl Party, Scott attending the hockey game, the movie Old, and future live recordings.

00:00 – Jeff kicks off the episode by talking about the most recent documentary he and his wife watched, they announce GCP offering Sunday Sermons, and Justin talks about his recent Souper Bowl party and who they had there. Justin gives an honorable mention to the soup Scott took to the event, Derek shares the soup he and his wife brought, and Justin talks about the type of soup Rusty and Autumn took. Jeff talks about what one of the soups was his favorite, Justin talks about his computer dying, and gives props to his friend that helped him fix it.

17:57 – They discuss if there is potential for the humanoid in Scott Topics article to be real, what people would do if they found them, and Scott talks about the uncontacted tribes in South Africa. Justin talks about what’s cool about The Climate Pledge Arena, the great food, and the incredible Just Walk Out store there. He shares an interesting piece of science behind Curling, makes plans for Erik to teach them how to play the official sport of Washington, pickleball, and runs through things recently posted on the shout-out channel (links in show notes :D ).

35:30 – Derek gives his review of the banana desert at the Texas de Brazil restaurant in Tacoma, Jeff shares his take on the movie Old by M. Night Shyamalan, and the three things he got out of it. He does a deep dive into what the movie is about, the ethics behind the movie, and ponders on if people younger than 50 got the same mortality vibe from the film as he did.

55:11 – Justin talks about who they will be interviewing next Sunday at The Union Club, the presidential bathtub there, and they ponder the possibility of TubTalk for the show. He talks about President Taft’s love for baths, shares how many presidents came to Tacoma in the past, and Jeff talks about seeing a president when working for a startup company in Pasco, Washington. Scott talks about his experience seeing a presidential candidate in Nevada and Justin wraps up this Sunday's Sermon giving listeners info on where they can find GCP online.

Based out of Tacoma, the documentary highlights the crisis that is brewing amongst today's first responders. In a culture where showing vulnerability means showing weakness, this ground-breaking documentary attempts to break down these barriers and smash the stigma of mental health in the fire service. Follow the journeys of 4 Tacoma Firefighters as they share their stories of pain, sacrifice, and resiliency in the midst of an unprecedented call volume increase. The film provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of those who put it all on the line every day, in an effort to prove, once and for all, that NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE…

00:10 – They kick off the episode talking about ghost hauntings, Justin welcomes Cody and Vern, and Vern shares when he was last at the Union Club. They talk about how The Union Club has evolved over the years, Cody talks about the station he's been at and how long he's been there. He talks about the area he covers, the levels of care in the field, and Vern explains why firefighters go to every call. He talks about how long he's been a firefighter, how he ended up as a Tacoma firefighter, and Cody talks about feeling the pulse of the city living downtown. He explains how the app Pulse Point has changed their job, the competitive nature of firefighting, and what brought him into this line of work.

19:57 – Cody talks about what got him started with doing social media for the Tacoma Fire Department, what led him to make the documentary, and Justin talks about the power behind Vern's story. Vern discusses what it feels like since the making of the video, the struggles he's faced since the documentary's release, and how firefighters are counselors for people in the community. Justin speaks on how the movie highlights the emergency call volume increase over the years, Scotts talks about the importance for other firefighters across the country to watch the video, and Jeff shares his appreciation for the cinematography within the movie.

Guion Rosenzweig sits down with the guys for an update on what SURGE Tacoma and what is happening with Old City Hall. SURGE Coworking “helps individuals and small businesses to reach their full potential by providing office space and an inspiring community of like-minded business people.” They have three locations in Tacoma: Union Club at 539 Broadway, SURGE Tacoma at 2367 Tacoma Ave S, and SURGE South Tacoma at 5401 S. Tacoma Way, and their newest building Old City Hall which they plan to have open in 2021. Guion also joined the podcast on episode 26 for those wanting more information on SURGE.

01:21 - Justin encourages listeners to share their love of the podcast on social media, how fans can get ahold of a GCP t-shirt, and what lead GCP to connect with SURGE Tacoma. Guion tells listeners what SURGE offers at the Union Club location, their two full kitchens that those renting space can use, and what has been happening since they were on the podcast the last time the chatted. Guion talks on the expansion of SURGE Tacoma with the Old City Hall, explains what their plans are with their redevelopment, and in addition to co-working space, how there will also be retail, office, and residential space.

8:15 – Guion shares how they will be incorporating the jail cells into the renovation of the building, when SURGE put the bid in for the building, and the history of the buildings usage. She explains that the apartments going in the building will be micro apartments, they cover the new route of the Light Rail extension in Tacoma, and the benefits of having that in the area as Tacoma continues to grow. Guion talks on their plans to be bringing the clock tower to life, how they are planning to keep the name of the building, and her role as the liaison to the city.

19:09 – Guion talks on bringing the building up to code, the safes that are built into the building, and the ideas of what they plan to do with them. She talks about the similarity between Union Club and Old City Hall, when they are planning to do the ground breaking, and the public benefits they will be offering to the community.

28:02 – Guion talks about the things they are sharing on Instagram to help bring Old City Hall back into the residents minds, their want to continually be transparent with the community, and how their goal is to stay invested in the community long after the building is complete. Justin talks about the importance of keeping old buildings alive in Tacoma, Guion shares what people in the 1800’s were trying to evoke with the look of the building, and how people can find more information on Old City Hall.

Thanks Guion for a great conversation on what is going on with the Old City Hall! Special Guest: Guion Rosenzweig.

This time the guys talk with Denetta Uzzell(who dances under the name Nafiah) and Carol The Belly Dancer, about the Tacoma event SPICE! Carol created SPICE! in 2017. SPICE! is a powerful, exciting showcase of dance styles from around the world with origins in the African and Arab diaspora, including North African and Middle Eastern folkloric, Afro-Latin, African-American, and Afro-Caribbean genres. Sometimes it’s glitzy, sometimes abrasive. Sometimes it’s brooding, sometimes ecstatic. Sometimes it’s sexy, always passionate. Sometimes political, but always powerful. Proceeds from the event will go to the SPICE world class artists and Tacoma Urban Performing Arts Center (T.U.P.A.C), a 501(c)3 that offers classical ballet and multicultural dance instruction for children and teens ages 6-18. The T.U.P.A.C mission is to provide their most deserving racially and socioeconomically diverse youth with world class opportunities to achieve Artistic Excellence in the performing arts. The all age’s event is on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at the Landmark Convention Center in Tacoma. Doors open at 6:30 pm with a cocktail hour and a 7:30 pm show. General Admission is $30 in advance or $35 at the door. There is also balcony and VIP seating available. You can purchase tickets at spicetacoma.bpt.me.

2:16 – The show kicks off with discussion on the GCP guys recording at the Union Club, info on how fans that are wanting to download older episodes can do so, and Carol explains what Spice is and the 15+ different styles of dance that will be showcased at the event. Carol explains that the benefit show is to raise funds for the nonprofit T.U.P.A.C, how T.U.P.A.C is modeled off the Dance Theater of Harlem, and Denetta talks about the two different types of dance she’ll be performing at the event.

9:43 – Carol explains the performance piece she’ll be doing, when she got started, and how hip-hop is pulling some of it’s current styles from classic styles of the past. Carol explains how SPICE celebrates the roots of each of the dances, it’s past corruption from western culture, and Scott talks about how one of his favorite parts of Tacoma is the diversity in the area.

20:08 – Justin touches on how the event is an all ages event, Carol talks on the history of twerking, the different styles of dance it came from, and the new ‘flossing’ dance style. They talk on how new dances spread quickly with globalization, if it’s good to have information spread so quickly with technology today, how important it is for people to get involved with the community, and the need for kids to get involved in things like dance.

33:37 – Carol talks about the type of dance classes T.U.P.A.C offer to adults, dabke dance style, rhythmic tap that is offered at Northwest Tap connection in Seattle, how cross cultures in the past created different types of dance throughout history, and how they came up with the idea of the show. Justin shares info on where people can find more info and buy tickets online.

Thanks Denetta and Carol for joining the guys to talk about SPICE! and for the amazing work you do to raise money for T.U.P.A.C! Special Guests: Carol the Belly Dancer and Denetta.
