The Grit City Podcast is a weekly audio experience like no other! Hosted from the vibrant city of Tacoma, Washington - also known as "Grit City," our show has been entertaining and informing listeners since 2014. And what a ride it's been!
Every week, we release a new episode that introduces you to the dynamic and inspiring individuals who call the Pacific Northwest home. From local business owners and entrepreneurs to authors, artists, and unique characters, our guests embody the hard-working, blue-collar spirit that Grit City is known for. And let's not forget the occasional drug-fueled weirdo we may have met at a comedy club the night before!
The Grit City Podcast first launched back in the summer of 2014 and quickly built a loyal fanbase of listeners who appreciated the show's unique perspective on the Seattle/Tacoma area. After a brief hiatus in 2017, the podcast was rebooted in 2018, with even more friends and family members involved. It quickly regained its "must listen to" status and went on to deliver an impressive 275 episodes and counting, delivering over 280 hours of audio content to our fans since. With no signs of slowing down soon!
Our mission at The Grit City Podcast is simple: to bring the hard-working spirit of the Pacific Northwest to the world and have a good time doing it! We aim to create a community of listeners who understand and appreciate the concept of "grit". With a focus on local business owners, entrepreneurs, and unique characters, sprinkled with a good dose of humor, The Grit City Podcast is a one-of-a-kind audio experience that you won't want to miss.
So, if you're looking for a weekly dose of inspiration, laughter, and a celebration of the human spirit, look no further than The Grit City Podcast! Subscribe now and join us for the ride!

On this episode David James Roberts, local Tacoma author, sits down for an exclusive GCP one-on-one conversation with Justin. David’s first book, "The Paper Man” is a fictional story based around the real life soccer player, Matthias Sindelar. Matthias was arguably the greatest player of his generation and his death in 1939 is still in question to this day. After growing up just outside of New York city, attending college in Arizona, and working in New Mexico and Kansas, David relocated to the PNW in 2014. In addition to writing, he has worked in radio, movie and television production, and as a college instructor. He has also begun working on a follow-up book which he hopes to have done by spring 2020.

02:04 – Justin gives a shout out to the listeners that have posted reviews of the podcast, expresses his appreciation of the guests that have been on the show in the past, and talks on the GCP plan for the New Year’s episode. He introduces David, David talks about what his book, The Paper Man, is about, and how the book was not only about events that happened during the last days of Matthias Sindelar’s life, he talks on how it was also about what it means for someone to be in a position of power even though he was outside the government.

12:48 – David talks on what drew him to the story and writing the book, the interweaving of sports and politics during the time of the early 1930’s, and the cultural aspects soccer has around the world. He speaks to how soccer is also a universal language around the world, the year that soccer was officially formalized, and what parts of the book are the fictionalized pieces of the story. Justin shares where people can find the book online, David talks on where he grew up, and what brought him to Tacoma.

29:49 – David shares the cultural differences he has seen between the mid-west and the PNW, how most of us, regardless of where you live in the country, have the same desires and hopes in life, and how he felt right at home when moving to Tacoma. He talks on what inspired him to write the book during the National Novel Writing Month, the length of time it took him to edit and flush out the book after writing it, and reminds listeners that anything creative takes practice to master.

44:39 – David shares places he has never been that he’d love to go to, countries he’s been to that he’d love to go back to, and what it was like for him to experience his first live soccer match. He talks about being attracted to soccer teams that represent their community, his favorite work throughout his career, and how he ended up being an assistant producer on the documentary “The Life Blood and Rhythm of Randy Castillo”.

Thanks David for sitting down with Justin for an intriguing conversation on the book and your career! Special Guest: David James Roberts.

15:55 – Tommy Rice discusses 41 being his first visit to the con and his book The Lok. He describes it as a book based of ideas from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Avengers slammed together set in WWI. He explains that it has elements of electronic and steam punk based on aliens coming to the planet breaking it into conflict between the two main continents. Tom then talks about what got him into being an author and brought him to Washington.

31:32 – Tommy dives more into the reason why he started writing after his father passed, what kept him going, and the things he brings to the table with his writing. Justin opens the present Tommy brought him and Brogan gives Tommy information on what he can look forward to at the con. Tommy also tells the guys where people can buy his book and the upcoming conventions he’ll be attending.

46:20 – The guys are joined by Donoven, Jason, and Chad, creators of Apocalypse the Risen from Rusted Portal, “a post-apocalyptic fantasy horror RPG based on Earth, twenty-five years after the fall of society, in an event known as the Rise; when demons rose to power and the Risen dead first appeared”. They discuss their successful Kick Starter run and how people that missed the Kick Starter can still put in for pre-orders.

The show comes to and end with where people can find Rusted Portal Games and the plans for people to be able to go to Wizard Keep Games to play the game. Jason talks about how long they’ve been going to the con personally and representing Rusted Portal Games. The guys also cover their favorite memories of the con.
Special Guests: Chad M., Donaven B., Jason S, and Tommy Rice.

This week, the GCP guys are joined by fantasy author Joe Malik. His first book, Dragon's Trail, was released in September of 2016, and is a #1 international bestseller. He is currently working on his second book in the series. Joe is appearing at RadCon Feb 16th-18th and will be a featured Reddit Fantasy Author of the Day on Feb 19th. The guys first met him at Norwescon 40 and were excited to sit down with him and catch up from the last time they talked. The show kicks off with the guys talking about meeting Joe at Norwescon 40 and what brought him to the con. Joe then dives into his fantasy novel, the first in the series called ‘Dragon’s Trail’. He explains that it’s a techno thriller and the importance of creating a historically accurate world in his stories that suspends adult disbelief in the mundane. He discusses the rejection letters he had received over the course of 4 years and having his first author signing at Norwescon.
8:08 – Joe explains what has happened since Norwescon 40, the bump in sales he had afterword, amd the promotional opportunities that came with it. He converses about it hitting #1 in Amazon in epic fantasy and the book getting picked up at Barnes and Noble. He talks more about world building, long sward sparing in his back yard, and participating in SCA.
Around the half way mark Joe discusses e-mail’s he receives from fans, him and his wife working with a veterinarian to design a saddle that would work with winged horses, and the importance of putting real world applications in with fantasy to connect readers with the story. Conversation then goes into the great editor that he had and his working career as a stunt man.
29:02 – Conversation goes to the story line of book two and the development of the evil wizard character. They talk about what a good villain can do for a book, his military travel, and his recent exploration of Scandinavian castles.
