The Grit City Podcast is a weekly audio experience like no other! Hosted from the vibrant city of Tacoma, Washington - also known as "Grit City," our show has been entertaining and informing listeners since 2014. And what a ride it's been!
Every week, we release a new episode that introduces you to the dynamic and inspiring individuals who call the Pacific Northwest home. From local business owners and entrepreneurs to authors, artists, and unique characters, our guests embody the hard-working, blue-collar spirit that Grit City is known for. And let's not forget the occasional drug-fueled weirdo we may have met at a comedy club the night before!
The Grit City Podcast first launched back in the summer of 2014 and quickly built a loyal fanbase of listeners who appreciated the show's unique perspective on the Seattle/Tacoma area. After a brief hiatus in 2017, the podcast was rebooted in 2018, with even more friends and family members involved. It quickly regained its "must listen to" status and went on to deliver an impressive 275 episodes and counting, delivering over 280 hours of audio content to our fans since. With no signs of slowing down soon!
Our mission at The Grit City Podcast is simple: to bring the hard-working spirit of the Pacific Northwest to the world and have a good time doing it! We aim to create a community of listeners who understand and appreciate the concept of "grit". With a focus on local business owners, entrepreneurs, and unique characters, sprinkled with a good dose of humor, The Grit City Podcast is a one-of-a-kind audio experience that you won't want to miss.
So, if you're looking for a weekly dose of inspiration, laughter, and a celebration of the human spirit, look no further than The Grit City Podcast! Subscribe now and join us for the ride!

The Norwescon 41 saga comes to an end with Fear and Loathing Part IV. This time they’re joined by their friend James and also David Carnahan from The Alexandria RPG Lending Library. The Alexandria RPG Lending Library is now an official non-profit in the state of Washington where people can write off their donations made to the library. Those interested in supporting them can donate to their current GoFundMe, http://www.gofundme.com/4dzhwu0.

The show kicks off with James reminiscing about Norwescon back in the day and the classic game store in Tacoma of the 90’s, Nibbles and Bytes. They discuss the rise of Magic, Nibbles and Bytes being their second home, and the close of Wizards of the Coast in Tacoma.

15:02 – Brogan ponders on what he remembers most about Nibbles and Bytes, he discusses friends he made while gaming there, spending the weekends at Justin’s house, and the various magic tournaments they played in the PNW area. Show then turns to conversation with Cajon, one of the original founders of Defcon and conversations with people attending the Defcon Friday night during the convention.

29:50 – James talks about his return to Tacoma in 2015 after moving to California in the early 2000’s. The conversations makes a short turn discussing the pictures that Australia puts on their cigarette packs and the stringent taxes the country puts also puts on them. Talk then goes back to what has changed in Tacoma during the time James had been gone and how long he’s been going to Norwescon.

42:35 – Conversation returns to Magic and back in the day when Wizards of the Coast had pre-releases that spanned over all 48 hours of one weekend. They talk about collecting rare cards, buying and trading them to make extra money, and James’s return to playing Magic after a decade of being away. Brogan discusses the prices Magic cards are selling for today, ones that would sell at $1 back in the late 90’s are now going for $20 or more today.

54:19 – The final Fear and Loathing for 2018 comes to and end with Brogan talking with David Carnahan, the chief librarian and procurer of books for The Alexandria RPG Lending Library.

David talks about the beginning of the lending library in 2016 and some of the original donations they received at Norwescon 40 in 2017. Brogan expresses his great appreciation for businesses like this and David talks about the various places and people the library gets donations from.

Thanks to everyone that joined the guys in their Norwescon 41 adventure, they look forward to hanging with you at next year’s epic NWC 42!!!!

Special Guests: David, James, and Rob.

Sponsored By:

Wizard's Keep Games: Building Community Through The Power Of Games.

The show kicks off with the Justin sharing his recording the day before with Dan discussing his 10 years at the con, his first con experience and his favorite memory. They cover hanging out at Deathcon, participating with Twister, and the noise complaints.
15:55 – Tommy Rice discusses 41 being his first visit to the con and his book The Lok. He describes it as a book based of ideas from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Avengers slammed together set in WWI. Tom then talks about what got him into being an author and brought him to Washington.

31:32 – Tommy dives more into the reason why he started writing after his father passed, what kept him going, and the things he brings to the table with his writing. Justin opens the present Tommy brought him and Brogan gives Tommy information on what he can look forward to at the con. Tommy also tells the guys where people can buy his book and the upcoming conventions he’ll be attending.

46:20 – The guys are joined by Donoven, Jason, and Chad, creators of Apocalypse the Risen from Rusted Portal, “a post-apocalyptic fantasy horror RPG based on Earth, twenty-five years after the fall of society, in an event known as the Rise; when demons rose to power and the Risen dead first appeared”. They discuss their successful Kick Starter run and how people that missed the Kick Starter can still put in for pre-orders.

The show comes to and end with where people can find Rusted Portal Games and the plans for people to be able to go to Wizard Keep Games to play the game.
This episode comes to a close with Kozar talking about being involved in LARPing and him and his friends putting together their own LARP with plans of having the first live event in September. He talks about documenting the LARP, creating the rules and regulations, the opportunities for people to make their own house and the amount of people in the area that are interested in LARPing.

This episode is part 1 of the Fear and Loathing at Norwescon 41 with their friends Rusty and Calvin. Norwescon is a sci-fi convention that promotes “science fiction, fantasy, and science through the written word, art, and educational programs, such as the holding of a yearly convention where the public is provided with the opportunity to hear noted writers, scientists, and educators speak on various aspects of the fields of science fiction, fantasy and science and to participate in discussions, displays, and lectures involving these fields.” (From the Norwescon website.)

The show kicks off with the guys talking about how long they’ve been attending the convention. Calvin tells about going since age 18 and Scott talks about also volunteering at the convention. Discussion then goes to QR codes and the different ways people are using them with marketing. Brogan then shares that he’s been going to the con for 22 years and Rusty a total of 20.

14:28 – The guys discuss the different types of panels that are offered at the convention in addition to the activity workshops that include sward and shield fighting and glass fusing. Brogan covers what the average cost is for attending and getting a hotel room for the weekend. He then dives into how important attending the convention over the years has been for him and they then cover Dr. Ricky, a previous guest on the podcast that has participated in Norwescon panels in the past.

27:23 – Scott talks about being a part of the convention staff and what happens during the monthly planning meetings. They then discuss where Rusty disappeared to and Brogan then turns the conversation to his favorite memories about the con. Talk then goes to the art room where people can bid on art submitted to the convention, parties during the early years of the convention, and how they have changed over the years with LCB rules that mandate how parties can be held.

45:15 – Justin and Scott talk about visiting Camp Bar in Tacoma on Saint Patrick’s Day and doing s’mores at their table. They reminisce about other things they did there before it became Camp Bar, including many comedy shows, watching Justin on Wheel of Fortune, and the roasting of Brogan on his birthday. Rusty also returns and they chat about how much each of them have had to drink so far that day.

Fear and Loathing 1 comes to an end with Rusty talking about the interesting conversations he’s had with people at the convention, including a lady explaining to him how a house cat could beat him in a fight and people that believe in ferries. Brogan talks about the earlier days with vampires in the masquerade and the time him and his sister signing up for the slave auction.

Stay tuned for Fear and Loathing 2 coming soon!! Thanks Rusty and Calvin for joining the guys for a great Norwescon 41 conversation!

Special Guests: Calvin and Rusty.
